Renée J. Miller named Canada Excellence Research Chair in Data Intelligence, to join Cheriton School of Computer Science in 2024

Professor Renée J. Miller has been named the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Data Intelligence. She is currently a University Distinguished Professor at Khoury College of Computer Science at Northeastern University. She will be joining the University of Waterloo in June 2024 as the Cheriton School of Computer Science’s first Canada Excellence Research Chair.

Waterloo dominates at 2023 ICPC East Central North America Contest

Four Waterloo teams, each with a triad of exceptional algorithmic programmers, took the first, third, fourth and 20th place spots at the recent 2023 ICPC North America East Division Contest held at the University of Windsor.

Waterloo Black, consisting of Max Jiang (3A CS), Wen Yuen Pang (4A CS) and Kevin Wan (4A CS and C&O) finished first, solving 10 out of 12 problems

Cheriton School of Computer Science researchers among Waterloo Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute recipients of $3.3M in NCC funding

Researchers at Waterloo’s Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute have received funding from the National Cybersecurity Consortium (NCC) under the Cyber Security Innovation Network program. This funding marks a significant milestone for CPI, Waterloo and the NCC, reinforcing a commitment to advance Canada’s cybersecurity ecosystem.

Twenty eligible projects were awarded a combined total of $11.2 million across three categories — commercialization, research and development, and training.

Professor Jo Atlee named one of Canada’s Most Powerful Women

Cheriton School of Computer Science Professor Jo Atlee has been named one of Canada’s Most Powerful Women by the Women’s Executive Network, a recognition conferred for her foundational research in software engineering and her advocacy for women in computer science.

Fairblock, company co-founded by Cheriton alumnus Peyman Momeni, secures $2.5M USD for privacy of decentralized applications

Fairblock, a company co-founded by Cheriton School of Computer Science master’s graduate Peyman Momeni, has secured $2.5 million to build infrastructure to bring conditional encryption and pre-execution privacy to blockchains. 

The recent funding round was led by Galileo Ventures and supported by a consortium of investment firms that include Lemniscap, Dialectic, Robot Ventures, GSR, Chorus One, Dorahacks, and Reverie, as well as several angel investors.
