Each year, UWaterloo celebrates one student from each faculty for outstanding achievement in co-operative education. To be considered for one of the prestigious awards, a co-op student must go above and beyond their employers’ expectations, be involved with their community, maintain a high academic standing and contribute positively to the co-op program. 

Two students from the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science are recipients of the 2016 Amit and Meena Chakma Awards for Exceptional Teaching by a Student. The awards were presented to PhD candidates John Doucette and Hadi Hosseini at Monday’s meeting of the University of Waterloo’s senate. Doucette and Hosseini join two PhD candidates - one from engineering, one from science.

Kate Larson, Associate Professor with the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science has been named an Outstanding Young Computer Science Researcher by the Canadian Association of Computer Science. This award recognizes excellence in Computer Science research by an academic researchers within 10 years of finishing their PhD.

As educators struggle to expand digital literacy globally and U.S. President Obama announces a $4 billion Computer Science for All initiative, the University of Waterloo is launching free online courseware that will teach people computer science and programming skills.

In 2012, the University of Waterloo and Cisco established an agreement to create a Cisco Systems research chair in Smart Grid to promote, support, and lead research, development and innovation within the use of technologies and solutions for smart power grids.

The David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science is deeply saddened to share the passing of former chair, Nicholas Cercone. Professor Cercone passed peacefully with his wife by his side, members of the school were told in a letter from York University's dean of the Lassonde school of Engineering Janusz Kozinski.

The David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science is mourning the loss of Gabriel Barsky, age 20, who died as the result of a motorcycle accident while in San Francisco on a work term. Gaby was a bright and vibrant third-year student who was extremely interested in the startup culture and loved working on his own side projects. Gaby will be deeply missed by his many friends in Computer Science and across campus.
