In this talk, I will draw correlations between several challenges and opportunities within the area of team sports analytics and key research areas within multiagent systems (MAS). I specifically consider invasion games, defined as sports where players invade the opposing team’s territory and can interact anywhere on a playing surface such as ice hockey, soccer, and basketball. I will highlight areas for MAS implementation and further development at the level of coaching and management. I will follow this discussion by including examples of ice hockey passing and pressure metrics derived from new puck and player tracking data to identify trends in playing styles at different positions separate from offensive events.
