In this talk, I discuss our work on building socio-technical systems that incorporate a socially meaningful conception of privacy. Specifically, I will describe Contextual Integrity based methods to discover privacy norms in a given context and to understand how these norms might differ from existing policies and regulations. Furthermore, I will present collaborative work on designing privacy-preserving systems that respect users’ privacy by ensuring that underlying information flows align with social norms and existing law and regulations.


Bio: Yan Shvartzshnaider is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Lassonde School of Engineering at York University, where he leads the Privacy Rhythm research lab. His research interests include sociotechnical systems that incorporate a socially meaningful conception of privacy that meets peoples’ expectations and is ethically defensible.
