Future students

Professors Olga Veksler and Yuri Boykov joined the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science earlier this year. Previously, both were full professors in the Department of Computer Science at Western University, where they were faculty members for 14 years.

Computer science doctoral student Mike Schaekermann, Dr. Joslin Goh and Schaekermann’s cosupervisors, Professors Kate Larson and Edith Law, have received a best paper award at CSCW 18, the 21^stACM Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing.

We’ve connected billions of devices to the Internet and in the coming years we’ll connect billions more. Many of these Internet of things or IoT devices have sensors in them to detect their environment — from a room’s ambient temperature and light levels to sound and motion.

Imagine the year is 1998. Streaming your favourite shows on the Internet is but a pipe dream and you can’t stay informed of current events due to technical problems. Millions of people around the world are trying to access credible news sites at the same time, causing the server to crash. 

Technology-assisted review (TAR) — an automated process used to select and prioritize documents for review, pioneered by Research Professor Maura Grossman and Professor Gordon Cormack — was used for the first time by a state archive to classify emails from the administration of former Virginia Governor Tim Kaine for release to the public.

Each year, the Cheriton Research Symposium concludes with a poster session for Cheriton Graduate Scholarship recipients. In total, 23 students participated in the 2018 Cheriton Research Symposium poster competition.

Katherine Gotovsky has been named a recipient of Canada’s largest and most comprehensive undergraduate merit award, conferred by the Loran Scholars Foundation.

This year, out of a pool of 5,023 applicants across the nation, and among 88 finalists, 34 earned the Loran Award, marking the largest class of scholars in the foundation’s history.
