Professor Ihab Ilyas named Vice-chair of ACM SIGMOD

Ihab Ilyas, professor and the Thomson Reuters­–funded Research Chair in Data Cleaning from Theory to Practice at the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science, has been elected vice-chair of the Association for Computing Machinery’s Special Interest Group on Management of Data (ACM SIGMOD). The four-year position begins July 1, 2017.

SIGMOD is ACM’s premier professional society responsible for innovative dissemination of knowledge on data management, including data description, storage, querying, analysis, security and privacy. As vice-chair, Ilyas will play a pivotal role in co-leading SIGMOD and managing its activities.

Cheriton School of Computer Science. “As a founding member of our Data Systems Group and of Tamr, a startup focusing on large-scale data integration and cleaning, Ihab is well placed academically and professionally to connect with diverse groups while strengthening SIGMOD’s initiatives and relationships.”

Ilyas’s research focuses on database systems, with special emphasis on data quality, management and uncertainty, rank-aware query processing, and information extraction. He is an ACM Distinguished Scientist, and recipient of an Early Researcher Award, a Cheriton Faculty Fellowship, an NSERC Discovery Accelerator Award, and a Google Faculty Award.
