Nolan Peter Shaw, PhD candidate
David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science

Supervisor: Professor Jeff Orchard

Category theory is an abstract mathematical language that allows us to reason about objects whose key structure is composition. It often yields insight by unifying seemingly disparate fields. In computer science it has already garnered close attention for its direct uses in functional paradigms (as well as other areas in theoretical CS), however it is only recently that its applicability to machine learning has been noted. This talk is meant to be an introduction to category theory, with motivating examples geared towards computer science.
