Mathematics Education Seminar • Summary of SIGMAA RUME Conference

Wednesday, April 3, 2019 2:00 pm - 2:00 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Dan Wolczuk, Faculty of Mathematics
University of Waterloo

At the end of February, I attended the MAA conference on research in undergraduate mathematics education. The action-packed three day conference contained many interesting innovations and ideas about how we can improve our student’s learning, motivation, and performance.

In this seminar, I will summarize some of the sessions that I attended. In particular, I will talk about:

  • Inquiry-based learning
  • Feedback on assessments
  • Confidence vs content (Are we demotivating our students?)
  • What makes a proof valid?
  • Other ideas for improving student engagement and learning
