The general Math 101 webpage can be found here . It contains the outline, guidelines, rules and regulations for the course.

This term, this section will use Piazza for course related questions. This is a newsgroup like message board where students can go online and post questions that both myself and others can answer. Please post all general course questions on Piazza. For more personal matters, feel free to email me. I will freely use both this webpage and Piazza for communication so please be sure to check both often.

You will need a UBC email account to log in. If you do not have one, try this link , which should work for any student even though it says alumni. If you’re still having problems logging in to Piazza, please email me ASAP! Piazza is my primary link to you. Not to mention most of the help will be available through Piazza.

Drop-in help is available for all first-year students at the Math Learning Centre (MLC) in LSK 100 (in the basement). The MLC is open from 9:00 to 7:00 Monday to Thursday and 9:00 to 4:00 on Fridays.

Quiz and Midterm Information

The midterms are each worth 17.5%. The dates for the midterms are

Tuesday February 7th at 6:30pm-7:30pm

Monday March 19th at 6:30pm-7:30pm

Locations to be announced. See the common web page above for more information.

Quizzes will be held weekly on Mondays (with two weeks omitted due to the midterms). Your worst quiz will be dropped. The dates are as follows. The quizzes and solutions (as well as statistics) will be posted below.

If a quiz is missed for a documented medical (or other documented reason), it will be ignored and other quizzes will be reweighted to compensate for missed quizzes. A student must provide proof or reason for missing a quiz in order to receive reweighting. Otherwise a mark of zero will be given.

For midterms, permission to write a makeup midterm OR reweighting of other course components may be given in the following two circumstances.

  • Prior notice of a valid conflict or absence on the scheduled date.
  • Notification to the instructor within 72 hours of absence due to medical illness.

Original written documentation (for example, a doctor’s note or letter from coach) is required in ALL cases. Otherwise a score of 0 will be assigned for the missed quiz or midterm. In all cases, contact me as soon as possible of knowing the conflict so that appropriate concessions can be made.

Regrading policy: Please indicate which problems you would like to have regarded on a sticky note/stapled piece of paper on the quiz or midterm in question. I will have a look at the question in doubt however I will also look at all other questions as well. This means that your mark could decrease after regrading. If the error in question is simply an addition error, then I will unconditionally fix it. I will not accept papers for regrading until 24 hours after both solutions have been posted and you have received your assignment.
