Testing Notes
Samba printing
- If the test page fails to print - or you get an error, you may not have your PC and UNIX samba password and accounts matched.
Otherwise their account permissions on fe02.math.uwaterloo.ca may not be set correctly. Typically incorrect passwords or account
mismatches will cause excessive delays opening the Printers and Faxes folder and in refreshing the status of all printers on the PC...
LPR printing
- If using LPR printing, you may need quota added for your username/machinename. Either send a request to accounts@cs or CSCF staff can do this following the notes here: AddingPrintQuota
TCP Printing (direct to printer printing)
*Note - this only applies to a few printers where someone can directly print to a printer
Fixing problems with SAMBA printers
- Symptom you can map network drives to smb-printers but printers appear to *hang*when opening them spoolsv.exe starts using 30% or more of the system CPU
Solution we need to remove the printer and reinstall using a
trick
- Delete printer from printers and faxes (If the spoolsv.exe is hung restart service and delete as quickly as you can)
- Edit registry and delete and references to the port - i.e. \\smb-printers.cs.uwaterloo.ca\lj_dc3624
- Reboot
- Install printer on LPT1 - do not auto detect printer - do not print a test page make sure you have the latest printer driver from the manufacturer
- Under Server properties (File menu of printers and faxes) pick Ports then Add a Port Pick local port and add the printer URI \\smb-printers.cs.uwaterloo.ca\lj_dc3624
- Open printer properties and pick Ports - change the port to the newly created port!
- Test the printer try rebooting and retesting
