Hardware notes:
- Adaptec JBOD external SCSI array
- Adaptec 2200S SCSI RAID card
- 3 x Adaptec 146gb disks
^A at system boot to go into SCSI controller configuration.
- Initialize the drives.
- Create the array. It tells me that a RAID5 will be 273gb, where a "Volume" and a RAID0 would be 410gb. We'll go with RAID5 for now.
- Choose a label for the array: "RAID5-0". Very imaginative on my part.
- Write caching: enable with battery.
- Create RAID via: Build/Verify (since this is an initial creation).
It tells me "The array is available immediately, but performance will be affected" (wording not exact, but that's what it meant). Now we see it in Manage Arrays.
Boot into the OS: aacraid sees it as sda. "Attached scsi removable disk sda at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0"
"fdisk /dev/sda" and create a single primary partition of 293598 MB. Now "mke2fs -j" it.
I experimented, but it appears that one cannot add disks to the RAID once it's been created. (Perhaps it could be done if one chose Volume? MikeGore tells me it's very likely that the filesystem would then barf though.)
