Proactively providing infrastructure on which others can build or replicate; enabling the School of Computer Science to create, define and teach the fundamentals and leading edges of computing.

The Infrastructure Group for the Computer Science Computing Facility provides as much School-requested infrastructure as our resources allow.

Choice of technology providing this infrastructure is mainly based on open standards, and scalable redundant designs.

We prefer to modernise to a more automatable "fire-proof" infrastructure than building a better "fire-truck" (or fight individual fires).

Resources are prioritised based on:

  • general need (size of potential user base),
  • reliability,
  • robustness,
  • security,
  • scalability,
  • reduction of staff maintenance time,
  • performance,
  • ergonomics, and
  • monetary cost.
