Standard email setup for Graduate Students

Graduate students are generally free to setup email however they like. They will get a WatIam account which will allow them to redirect their email to any account of their choosing. Typically, they will redirect it to a Gmail or similar account, or to a previous institution. They will also get a CS core account. By default, it will be forwarded to the WatIam account, thereby redirecting it the their email address of choice. If the WatIam account is set to redirect to their CS account (eg: username@cs.uwaterloo.ca), then their UW email will go to mail.cs. From there, it will depend on whether they have manually updated the .forward file on the CS core (most don't). If they're not forwarding their email then they will need to setup a client to view their email (we usually setup Thunderbird), or use MyWaterloo.

Accessing CS email via MyWaterloo

  • users can read their mail.cs email via MyWaterloo:
    • http://mywaterloo.ca will take them there. They will need to use their CS username and password, and select "mail.cs" as their server.
