CSCF — Computing Support for Research
Welcome to CSCF Research Support. This page is a collection of information
about obtaining support for your research computing needs. Research computing
is supported by CSCF's Research
Research support is provided by two different mechanisms: Dedicated Support,
and Desktop Support. Dedicated Support is designed to allow the researcher
or research group to choose how best to prioritize tasks to be performed by
the CSCF support staff. It can be used to cover work on servers, desktop
machines, laptops, printers, and so on. Desktop support is an inexpensive
way to obtain support for specific individual machines.
More detailed information is available:
If you are unsure which form of support you should use or if you have
any other questions that aren't answered here, please contact the
Manager of the Research Support Group,
Lawrence Folland (x32214).
Some Important Policies
- Home PCs
Machines that are supported but are resident off-campus (ie: at home), need
to be brought into the university in order to get service. CSCF policy will
not require support staff to service machines at the homes of researchers.
- Charges for Replacement Parts
In the event that replacement parts or third-party service
is required to complete a request, the requestor will need to provide an
account to which those charges may be applied. The approximate cost of those
charges will be provided before proceeding with the service.
- Review of Support Subscriptions
The intention of this service is to provide an average number of hours of
support per term based on the number of units of dedicated support for which
you are subscribed. The actual number of hours being used will be reviewed
periodically to determine if you are over or under subscribed. You will be
contacted by a member of CSCF if any adjustment is required.
Machine or Group Specific Documentation
Cluster Reservation System —
We have a number of High Performance Clusters that can be reserved. These are typically owned by a particular group or individual researcher from whom access will need to be requested.
CERAS IBM Blade Centre —
User documentation for the CERAS group's IBM Blade Centre. Also available as
a PDF or you can peruse the
documentation in full page format.
