Configuring the Xerox Phaser 8400 printer under Linux

Using CUPS and PPD files

• Please refer to CupsOnLinux before starting
• Download this file Xerox 8400 PPD file
• Extract the file into a temporary location then move whichever ever files you need to your systems PPD folder
• You must restart cupsd after you adding any PPD files
• PPD location Notes
  Debian PPD files are in /usr/share/ppd/Xerox (file need to be gziped)
  On Fedora PPD file are in /usr/share/cups/Xerox (file need to be gziped)
  

Configuration

• Please refer to CupsOnLinux before starting
• Open web as root to http://127.0.0.1:631/
• Do Administrative Tasks - http://127.0.0.1:631/admin
• Add Printer (Under Printer Section http://127.0.0.1:631/admin/?op=add-printer )
  • Name (enter a queue name like Xerox_DC2456)
  • Location (enter office location)
  • Description (enter a description )
  • Continue
• Device for - pick the device interface from the drop down list usb devices will identify the printer by name here
  • Continue
• You should see a message that the printer has been succesfully added
• Pick the Configure Printer button from the Printers page - see http://127.0.0.1:631/printers
• Please refer to CupsOnLinux for other configuration Options - make sure you pick the correct paper size options - see Printer Configuration button under http://127.0.0.1:631/printers page

Distribution-independent Method

Notes This is a really cool printer which uses "solid ink". It's also lightening fast!

Downloading the necessary software

• Go to http://www.office.xerox.com/cgi-bin/DriverD.pl?printer_type=8400&file_type=driver&language=en
• Download PrinterPkgXPXX_2004_01_27.tar and Linuxi386XPXX_3.01.71.tar

Installing the software

• Basically, you need to untar all files tar -xvf file.tar, cd into each folder and execute setup as root
• NOTE: You must install the Code Package - Linuxi386XPXX_3.01.71.tar - first.
• You should follow the instructions on http://www.office.xerox.com/cgi-bin/DriverD.pl?language=en&search_string=Install_ReadMe.pdf but I found them very... ambiguous

Adding a printer

• Execute xpadmin as root (if you su, make sure you execute it as su -p so that your environment is preserved - access to X)
• Follow the instructions at http://www.xerox.com/office/8400kb/,case=R1002054270

That should do it and now you should be able to use your new uberprinter!
