Tablets for Teaching
(Notes originally from the CS Faculty pages)
Tablet PCs are a combination of a laptop with the old-known graphic tablet.
Using a pen instead of a mouse, you can write directly on the screen.
It is specially adapted to teaching to large classes:
most class-rooms are equipped with a beamer and a large and high screen,
while their board is lower by necessity (you need to write on it),
and often much smaller. Plus, a board requires you to write unnaturally large, which is slow and awkward, while you can write on a tablet PC at a more natural size, and let the projector enlarge it.
There are several technological solutions, some corresponding to a conventional laptop which can be used eventually as a tablet PC, some corresponding to a tablet PC which can be used eventually as a laptop. Most of them are sold with Windows XP installed, but more than a few can be set up under Linux.
LawrenceFolland has been studying some of them and points out several websites listing offers:

- Apple doesn't make tablets, nor are there (yet) announced plans to start.
