Known Errors and Alerts

  • Nagios Service Alert ... CUPS Print Server ... (Return code of 255 is out of bounds)

This usually means that there are stuck jobs on the print server. Go to http://print.cs.uwaterloo.ca:631/jobs in a browser. You should see one (or sometimes more) jobs that have been stuck in their queue for too long. The job State may explain the problem. E.g. "The printer is unreachable at this time."

In the jobs page, the ID is a link to the queue for that printer. On that page, the "Connection:" contains the hostname for the printer within a CUPS URI. E.g., the URI socket://lj2-isg.cs.uwaterloo.ca:9100 contains the hostname lj2-isg.cs.uwaterloo.ca. If you can't ping the hostname for the printer, it may be powered off. If it is powered on and plugged into the network, there may be a network problem.

If the jobs are old, simply delete them. cscfhelp is able to delete them. The password can be reset as root@print.cs ('passwd cscfhelp').

When the problem is fixed and the job has printed (or been deleted), within 5 minutes Nagios should notice that the problem is fixed.
