OFIS Notes from 6 April, 2011

Today

Anthony is sick today, so no demo.

Vu: everything is working in dev2, including delegation. working on new headers.

Daniel: hg checkouts cleaned up. My checked out php doesn't work on ofisdev yet. Ray: because we haven't installed php on it yet. Chose a version: latest php; we'll deal with code upgrades as necessary?..

  • described how checkouts work: ofis-dev is simply a branch from production. includes unpruned and pruned versions in history.

Ray:

  • will install php for next week.
  • we haven't installed mysql on ecdev. do we do that, or install postgres? Daniel: or for now, use a ssh tunnel?
Discussion of which DB to use in dev. What meets our needs? Right now we don't need a separate DB, though in mid-to-long term, could be more efficient dev. For now, try ssh tunnel out.

does Mysql Workbench work for postgres? Marlon says "db workbench" is platform-independent, but possibly not for postgres. Marlon brought up full-text search as one thing we might also need psgres for? Marlon/Olga/Vu: on display format for withdrawn students, to solve prof error-report from previous week.

Marlon: discussion with M. Towell in CS about grad students, led to identifying a problem: how would CS inform GSO about changes pre-degree, where CS is less rigorous about reporting to GSO than engineering? Does it matter?.. such as for gov't count dates? We don't know.

Also, marlon working on a few GSO records for deceased students.

workflows and sharepoint: Marlon says Eng Comp had discussion with IST/Steve Markin about Sharepoint; Steve said OFIS functionality could be "folded in". ray: on technical merits, don't assume sharepoint is the right answer, with current versions. Agreement, that if we find functionality we need, such as workflows, AND we can handle data-conversion cleanly, worth investigating. Eng Comp is starting a project, which also relies on a non-MS database that could be sharepoint; they will work on that first.

Marlon: podcast pointed him at java-based "joget workflow"

Discussion of oracle db, as expensive option that probably won't help... and IST / security / view-only databases.
