Tutorial 6: Switch topology

Points to discuss:

  • building organization
  • -cs2 and -cs1 organization and exceptions
  • spanning-tree stuff

Where to Store network diagrams

For "www.cs" access store PDF files in "cscf.cs.uwaterloo.ca:/autofs/www/cs/cscf/cscfnow/diagrams/networking" (sftp://cscf.cs.uwaterloo.ca/autofs/www/cs/cscf/cscfnow/diagrams/networking might work in a Linux desktop fire-browser). The directory is owned by dhergott and group writable by the www_cscf group.

Core router architecture

The CS network core consists of four HP 5600 routers interconnected in an almost-complete graph (only one link is missing). The connections are formed with /30 point-to-point networks, as follows:

   172.19.1.0/30 mc-cs2-dc-cs2-trk2.net.uwaterloo.ca
     172.19.1.1 mc-cs2-trk2.uwaterloo.ca
     192.19.1.2 dc-cs2-trk2.uwaterloo.ca

   172.19.1.4/30 mc-cs2-dc-cs1-trk3.net.uwaterloo.ca
     172.19.1.5 mc-cs2-trk3.uwaterloo.ca
     172.19.1.6 dc-cs1-trk3.uwaterloo.ca

   172.19.1.8/30 mc-cs2-mc-cs1-trk1.net.uwaterloo.ca
     172.19.1.9 mc-cs2-trk1.uwaterloo.ca
     172.19.1.10 mc-cs1-trk1.uwaterloo.ca

   172.19.1.12/30 dc-cs2-mc-cs1-trk3.net.uwaterloo.ca
     172.19.1.13 dc-cs2-trk3.uwaterloo.ca
     172.19.1.14 mc-cs1-trk3.uwaterloo.ca

   172.19.1.16/30 dc-cs2-dc-cs1-trk1.net.uwaterloo.ca
     172.19.1.17 dc-cs2-trk1.uwaterloo.ca
     172.19.1.18 dc-cs1-trk1.uwaterloo.ca

VLANs:

trk1interconnect (#1801) is used for 172.19.1.8/30 and 172.19.1.16/30
trk2interconnect (#1802) is used for 172.19.1.0/30 only
trk3interconnect (#1803) is used for 172.19.1.4/30 and 172.19.1.12/30
