Mobile Device Management Procedures

New Devices

Before we give new devices to the library, we should:

  • remove any earbuds
  • briefly check for adequate (over 80%) charge
  • ensure that the device is powered off
  • add A Thinking Ape sticker, if not engraved
  • add CSCF barcode, leaving room for library barcode
  • add to inventory, including make, model name, model number, serial number, colour, flash memory size.
  • After the library has barcoded the device, we should add the library's barcode to our inventory.

In Between Terms

Between end of lectures and the start of the next term, we should:

  • get all the devices back from the library (in batches)
  • check for missing accessories
  • inspect the device and accessories for damage
  • fully charge the device, also checking that the charger, cable, battery and charging system work okay
  • check the device for basic functionality
  • reset to factory defaults
  • upgrade OS and apps?
  • power off
  • repair or replace items as needed
  • return to library (or surplus and notify library)
  • update inventory with any missing info and a comment about when the device was last checked.

It is important that the devices are powered off when we give them to the library. Otherwise, the battery will soon discharge to 0%, which damages the battery, shortening its life.

Surplus

We should surplus older devices, if:

  • there are more than enough devices to support the number of students,
  • the device is damaged and not worth repairing, or
  • the device (especially the OS version) does not support the needs of any class.
