The command init_home_desktop (maintained on debian31:/software/bin/init_home_desktop) is available for linux xhiered machines.

init_home_desktop - move aside desktop files for kde and gnome
to allow them to be re-generated on login.
files moved to a unique directory whose title is "#.init_home_desktop.nnnn"
where nnnn is the process ID.

invocation: init_home_desktop [user]

user defaults to the current user.
[user] is ignored unless run by root.
if run by root without a user parameter, verifies operation before moving
  root's files.
