Review last meeting's Action Items

linux.cscf.uwaterloo.ca

• Still blocked on comprehensive review of authentication/authorization configuration, work stalled - need to schedule in person meetings
  • Scrapping Ubuntu 22.04, will jump directly to Ubuntu 24.04
  • "new" hardware provisioned for this purpose - moved back to MC 3015
  • investigating having two instances of linux.cscf in separate server rooms

DFSc

• Snapshots disabled again due to problems documented in RT: 1321957
  • Considering automated detection and remediation of this particular problem
• Should also email users who will have their homedirs deleted - Nick
  • RT: 1318097
  • Recent tape backups have been verified so we should be OK to delete these now
• Quotas set for most accounts, list of quota violators provided for Nick, see RT: 1317978
• CPU problems with new *-423 hardware have been "fixed" by Devon re-seating the CPUs
• Need to migrate MySQL (RT: 1319809) and Postgres (RT: 1319808) backups from DFSc to storage-202.

Account Management

UID/GID re-use

• Currently causes problems with old homedirs winding up owned by new users, see RT: 1304698 and RT: 1319439
• Could fix, or we could just stop re-using UIDs/GIDs... Do we have any systems that don't support 32 bit UIDs/GIDs?
  • Reached out to Robyn Landers
    • Clayton has potentially fixed the problem of re-using UIDs/GIDs
    • Need to hammer out details what it looks like to not reuse UIDs/GIDs

Networking

• DFSc Migration
  • Currently unsafe to `reboot` LXC instances without doing a full `lxc-stop ... ; lxc-start ...`, see https://rt.uwaterloo.ca/Ticket/Display.html?id=1322353#txn-34439871
  • Should be resolved by end of term
  • There are still clients that need their config updated (ex. /etc/fstab referring to old addresses).
• Server room old HP networks will slowly stop being used. Use FCR instead now for new deployments.
  • Documentation is in progress for the new network
