January '06 Meeting

Meeting: 1pm-2pm.

Agenda

  • Ubuntu 5.10 arch-masters
    • amd64 & x86
    • in process.
  • student.cs front-end servers (mef-fe02 - 12.student.cs)
    • Ubuntu with KDE & Gnome [see below for discussion on additions]
    • performance testing
      • one server works with 20 simult. users, so we should be OK for overall capacity
  • Review Dave's list of Supported Software: http://www.cs.uwaterloo.ca/~dlgawley/CSI/SupportedSoftware.shtml
    • suggested additions/deletions?
      • plugins: flash, java, possibly SessionSaver?
      • Patrick says look at mime-types in xhier packages to have common behaviour
    • Crossover: Christopher C. says he's seen problems with it, version 4.2. Daniel hasn't installed on cscf machines, but it works for him at home.
  • Linux image: MikeP is trying standard linux image on newest HW, which may work. If not, we'll need a second linux image. (we're already adding a second windows image for new HW.)
  • legato issues on pilatus; currently being worked on by Guoxiang.
  • plans for this year?
    • accounts-maint/auth/authenticating off active-directory
      • dave says macs are in process; linux can be next in line
      • mike suggests testing on plg?
      • to solve accounts username length problem, among others
    • sunfire 4200 beatbox - might be used to install suse / test 64-bit archmaster
      • ubuntu doesn't support 4200's Serial Attached Scsi (SAS) with Breezy Badger kernel
        • but- latest (dec '05) kernel may be fixed, so Daniel could make a live CD with it to try. Otherwise, the new Ubuntu in April may have the kernel.
    • additional window managers on new front-ends- suggestions?
      • what window managers is Patrick working on for solaris?
        • the old standards (twm, tvtwm). plus, blackbox. problems with gnome.
      • so maybe we should add tvtwm and blackbox
      • speaking of compatibility: Patrick suggests versioning x11env for linux- which he did template for already - I can build a new package that is based on that one, but works in CS?
      • kde/gnome directories pre-existing for users; are graphicslab/nortellab classes 4th yr honours classes?...
