CS Grad Student Printing

All new CS Grad Students receive a standard printer quota on the self-serve printers in MC (MC3016). Additional printers are available, eg the "ljp_cs" printers in dc2320, ljp_3106 (now located in dc3116) and lj_dc3624. Individual research groups may have other printers intended for their own use.

In order to use any printer other than the self-serve printers, Grad Students must ask their supervisor to request printer quota on the desired printers. The supervisor must forward the request to accounts@cs who will set up the necessary authorizations.

Printing from Windows systems will require settup a printer mapping using Samba. See WindowsPrinting for more details. This document is written for the ljp_cs printers but should be applicable to any core-attached printer.

Printing from Debian is not currently supported. You must transfer the files you wish to print to the core environment and use the lpr command to print.

Printing to the CS Grad Student printer in DC 3316 from a PC running Windows

Local (non-domain) user

• Start -> Run -> \\smb-printers.cs
• Enter your password in the form: cs-general\username

• Right-click on lj_csgrad and choose "Connect"
• It pops up a warning to the effect of "Will install printer driver..." (it won't - click Ok)
• It then reports "Cannot find printer driver" (click Ok)
• Pick printer and model: HP -> HP Laserjet 4100 (PS) will do. If you want, you can install the HP Laserjet 4250 PS driver from HP, first.
• Once it creates the new printer, you will see: "Access denied, unable to connect"
• However, it does seem to work!

Printing from a PC running Debian Linux (older GradPCs)

Notes

• this procedure requires root access
• your machine will need to be added to the list of supported hosts

• Open a browser to the following URL: http://localhost:631/
• Click Add Printer
• Enter root username/password when prompted

• Device: LPD/LPR Host or Printer
  • click Continue
