Avast command line usage

  • Update virus definitions:
    • avast-update
  • Scanning:
    • avast -t A -r report.txt directory_to_scan >/dev/null 2>&1
      • Note: the report.txt file contains the summary and any errors - no point saving stdout

Avast GUI version

  • avastgui
    • Virus definition updates and directory scans can all be done within this app
    1. ) update definitions
    2. ) Add directories to scan
    3. ) start scan

Examples

  • Mount the Windows partition you want to scan, say mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/sda2
    • hint: fdisk -l to view the partitions

    • Click on "Update Database" to update virus definitions (that can take a few minutes)
    • Select folders to scan -> Selected folders
      • Click the "+" to select the folder to scan
      • point to /mnt/sda2
    • Start Scan
