With recent Virus Definition Updates we get the error
An error occurred in avast! engine: Invalid argument
Fix:
Run this connand first:
sysctl -w kernel.shmmax=128000000

Avast command line usage
Update virus definitions:
avast-update
Scanning:
avast -t A -r report.txt directory_to_scan >/dev/null 2>&1
Note: the
report.txt
file contains the summary and any errors - no point saving
stdout

Add directories to scan

Examples
Mount the Windows partition you want to scan, say
mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/sda2
hint: fdisk -l to view the partitions
Click on "Update Database" to update virus definitions (that can take a few minutes)
Select folders to scan -> Selected folders
Click the "+" to select the folder to scan
point to
/mnt/sda2
Start Scan
