Dave's Monthly Web Address September

Well, it has just been announced. They are now changing the Webster's definition of the word late to include my picture. If the picture isn't in your dictionary or it hasn't appeared online yet, it's because I was delayed in getting a picture to them. Yes, September 11th IS pretty late in the month to get out a September address, and I promise I'll be much better next month. However, there was something called Orientation Week going on, and it had a bad habit of eating up all my time and energy.

Much to my delight (and surprise) my August Web Address was included in the Greek (Fraternity / Sorority) newspaper, the Trojan. (And NO, it's not that kind of Trojan ). It would have been nice if they had received my permission, and it would have been nice if it was formatted a little better, but I still felt that it was a sweet gesture. And just in case they're hard pressed for material next issue, Hello Trojan Readers!

I received some feedback on the page, but not as much as I had hoped. For a while, the feedback mechanism wasn't working, so If you did send me feedback and I never replied, then send some more.

Well, I have to say that it is really really exciting to have students back on campus. I love walking around the UCC. I love eavesdroppingon the occasional conversation, saying hi to the occasional stranger, and the giving a friendly nod to patrons in the Spoke. I didn't realize how lonely I was during the summer. Sure, I'm a lot busier now, but the pace is downright exhilarating.

I always felt that we should come back to school for just three weeks. Orientation week is great, and then the first week of school is really exciting: Buying new textbooks, finding out who is in your class, and seeing what changes were made to the UCC this year. The third week is cool because you start your routine, and find out how the rest of the year is going to unfold. But then I think there should be another summer break, and then we could come back for another three weeks. Sure, it may not be very productive, but just think of how refreshed we would be!

September is an exciting month, and there is a lot going on, so make sure you come out and participate!

• I think e-mail is nifty.
• My "drop-in" hour is currently Fridays, from 1:00 - 2:00 in the USC office (Room 340 UCC) [Disclaimer: may be subject to change]
• You can just show up at the USC office and hope I can see you.
• You can call me, at 661-3567 (or 661-3574) to book an appointment
• I want to play squash with you! Goodness knows that I need the exercise, and I want to get a squash rotation going so I will play once a day. By October, I will have a more routine schedule, and I will have blocked off times to play, but for now, I'm fitting the games in where I can. e-mail or call me if you want to play. I'm still a beginner, and I don't care if you kick my ass, but I have my moments so don't underestimate me.

Current Projects
Special things I'm working on over the next month.

• Late Night with David Tompkins. Delayed this one a tad. Let me refresh your memory. I plan on having a bi-weekly television show (a la David Letterman) on TV-Western, with guests and musical acts, skits, and anything else I can think of. If you are creative and funny and want a good project to work on that will last the whole year, then drop me a line.
• A good chunk of time in September and the beginning of October will be spent dealing with the Ontario Government's White Paper, and the corresponding Advisory Panel on Future Directions for Postsecondary Education (or the "Smith Panel")
• Operation: Face-Lift (a goal setting document) will continue to take up a portion of my time, as we attempt to set and solidify our goals council goals this year.
• Going through and cleaning up the USC by-laws can be tedious, but it is an important annual process.
• Scheduling all the great and wonderful activities for the next 8 months.
• Finishing up re-organization of my filing system (the filing cabinet came late - probably not a big deal to you ... but it's HUGE to me)

Random Thoughts - September
Not much, really, but things I do think about.

• I am a really big pinball fan. Love the game. I like Williams games the best, I don't mind Bally, I'm indifferent for Gottlieb, but I really dislike Sega (formally known as data east) games. The Wave now has GoldenEye (Sega), but the spoke has Who Dunnit? by Bally. I'm already a little bored with the game, and based on the rules for Who Dunnit? that I found on the McCannical Pinball Page there's not that much more to it.
• It's a USC president tradition to buy a Franklin Quest day planner, and it is the closest I have ever gotten to a security blanket. I just wanted to share with you a piece of my life.
• When I was typing up this report, I was listening to one of my favourite bands, YES. (How's that for a random thought)
• Hey! This month I didn't forget to spell check the page!
• I have to start thinking about what I want to do with the rest of my life. I have a lot of options, and to be honest, I have no clue where I might end up.
• I'm just dying in anticipation waiting for the new Douglas Adams book, The Salmon of Doubt to be released.
