2000

  • Consortium for Software Engineering Research (CSER), with CS professors Ric Holt and Michael Godfrey, wins NSERC Synergy Award for Innovation.

2001

  • Frank Tompa succeeds Nick Cercone as Chair of the Department of Computer Science (2001 - 2002)
  • Degree in Software Engineering (BSE) is launched jointly with Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
  • Canada's first Bioinformatics undergraduate degree program is established.
  • Summer Internship program for Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) interns is started.

2002

  • The Department of Computer Science becomes the School of Computer Science within the Faculty of Mathematics.
  • Frank Tompa becomes the first Director of the School of Computer Science (2002 - 2003).
  • Computer Science Computing Facility (CSCF) is established.
  • Wes Graham is recognized by UW and the City of Waterloo with a street named "Wes Graham Way".

2003

  • Johnny Wong succeeds Frank Tompa as Director of the School of Computer Science (2003 - 2006).
  • Ian Munro is named Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
  • Distinguished Lecture Series in the School of Computer Science is established. Speakers include Alfred V. Aho, Brian Kernighan, James Gray, and Barbara Grosz.

2004

  • Construction begins on UW Research and Technology Park (North Campus), with iAnywhere Solutions Inc. being the first to build and occupy space.
  • Symbolic Computation Group (SCG) wins the NSERC Synergy Award for Innovation.

2005

  • School of Computer Science is renamed the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science in recognition of David Cheriton's gift of $25,000,000.
  • Frank Tompa is recognized by UW and the City of Waterloo: a street is named "Frank Tompa Drive".
  • IBM Centers for Advanced Studies honours 90 Canadian Pioneers in Computing. Twenty-seven of these pioneers are UW professors, former professors, or alumni.
  • Don Cowan receives Grand Cross of Scientific Merit, Brazilian National Order of Scientific Merit (Brazil's highest civilian scientific honour).

2006

  • George Labahn succeeds Johnny Wong and is appointed Interim Director of the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science (2006 - 2007).
  • Ming Li is named Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
  • The David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science establishes a collaborative agreement with Tsinghua University.

2007

  • Tamer Özsu becomes Director of the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science (2007 - present).
