Accessing Course's Microsoft 365 (M365) Email Account
Basic Info
- In April and May 2022, course email accounts were moved from Connect to Microsoft 365.
- Course email accounts are "shared mailboxes", meaning you should NOT log in with the course name or the course's password. Instead, login with your own UW username and password.
- With permission from your ISC, you can also use supported desktop email clients to check the course email.
Getting Permission to use Course Email Account
If you don't already have permission to use the course email account, contact
CSCF to get access.
Using the M365 Outlook Website
- Go to https://outlook.office.com/mail/csNNN@uwaterloo.ca/ where csNNN is your course (replace csNNN with cs115, cs240, cs240e, se212, etc).
- If you're redirected to connect.uwaterloo.ca, then your course's email has not been migrated from Connect to M365 yet.
- Login with your own UW username and your own password. Do NOT login using csNNN as the username.
- After logging in, you should see the course emails.
Using Email Clients
- Check with your ISC first that you can use an email client. Some email clients by default can save emails (confidential info) on your computer, and this raises security/privacy issues.
- The steps differ depending on whether your own UW email is on M365 or Connect.
- All ISAs' own email should be on M365.
- ISCs and CS staff/profs are mixed. You can check by going to https://outlook.office.com and logging in as yourself. If you're told to go to connect.uwaterloo.ca, then your own UW email is still on Connect. Otherwise, your UW email is on M365.
- In the steps below, replace sharenam/sharedna with csNNN.
Outlook app on Windows
- If your own UW email is on M365 and already in Outlook app, and you want to add the course email to Outlook: https://uwaterloo.atlassian.net/l/c/PyVzQxK8
- Known issue: In Step 9, you may get an error "The name cannot be resolved. The name cannot be matched to a name in the address list." A workaround is to start with a blank Outlook profile, then add both your UW email and the course email during the first setup window/wizard.
- Otherwise, these instructions should work: https://uwaterloo.atlassian.net/l/c/R19VUEhj
Outlook app on macOS
Thunderbird (for both Windows and macOS)
- Instructions: https://uwaterloo.atlassian.net/l/c/Jm7qm0Di
- If your own UW email is on Connect: In the SMTP Server settings, use connect.uwaterloo.ca instead of outlook.office365.com, and Normal Password instead of OAuth2.
- Known issue: If you are prompted for your password every time you send an email, you can use Thunderbird's Primary Password to remember your password.
