Adding Storage

Remote Install storage is used to store images of the target systems and the update packages needed to configure the settings of the target systems. Remote Install can access the storage on the local system (image server) or the storage on a system on the network (storage server) if you can create a Microsoft® Windows® shared folder on the storage server.

NOTE: If you create many large capacity storage locations, the admin console may sometimes fail to respond promptly because Remote Install is calculating available storage space. If you experience slow response or no response while viewing a page, close the browser and retry the operation.
NOTE: Reinstalling the same version of Remote Install on an image server erases the records of stored images and configurations in the Remote Install database, but the image files remain in the file system. If you create storage share directories which use the same paths as were used in the previous installation, Remote Install will automatically import the images it finds in those directories. If you have problems recovering image data after a reinstallation, see "Recovering Remote Install Images From a Corrupted Image Server Database."

To add storage, perform the following steps:

  1. Estimate the storage needed for Remote Install operations.

Because each image will have an operating system in the size range of gigabytes, it is recommended that you prepare at least 10 GB of disk space as storage.

  2. Connect the storage server to the network.

You can also use the image server as a storage server.

  3. Ensure that the storage server has a static IP address.

After this storage server is registered with the image server, changing the IP address, user name, or password will cause problems with the image server.

  4. Create a shared directory on the storage server, with full-control permission provided.
NOTE: Windows Server 2003 sets default share permissions to read-only, so make sure your share has full-control permission.

The image server requires three parameters to access the storage: the name of the shared folder, your user name on the storage server, and your password on the storage server. To add storage to the image server, perform the following steps:

  1. Click SettingsStorage.

  2. Click Add.

  3. Enter the following parameters for adding storage:

NOTE: (*) indicates a required field or task.

  4. Click Add.

Deleting Storage

To delete storage, perform the following steps:

  1. Select SettingsStorage.

  2. On the List storage location page, click the path name under Storage Location that represents the storage you want to remove.

  3. On the Location: <path name> page, click Delete.

Importing Images

If you are reinstalling the same version of Remote Install, the system automatically imports existing images if you create storage directories with the same paths as were used before. To import other images, see "Images→ Import/Export→ Import."

Exporting Images

See "Images→ Import/Export→ Export."

Deleting Images

NOTE: You cannot delete an image if it has been deployed. You must delete the target system to which an image was deployed before you can delete the image.

To delete an image, perform the following steps:

  1. Select ImagesProperties.

  2. On the Images page, click the name of the image you want to delete under Name.

  3. Click Delete.
