Dear UW Day helpers

Thank you all for volunteering to help at UW day on this Saturday, November 4! I have contacted most of you about your schedule individually, and I hope that your assigned duties are consistent with your availability (there are some minor changes here, so please read carefully). If things do not work, please let me know as soon as possible. I also have included information on what you need to do before and during the day. I have listed the various activities and the people assigned to each. At the very bottom of the message is a summary, by volunteer, of activities throughout the day followed by a list of the name tags I am ordering.

Please read the general information, search for your name in the volunteer schedule, summary by name, and name tag list, and make sure that everything is correct. If I have made an error, please let me know ASAP, and if you have any questions or suggestions, please send them my way.

General Information -- Please read this now

Shirts

We will be providing UW CS shirts for all volunteers who do not have them ; please see Lorna Kropf in DC2317 (CS Main Office) on Friday, November 3 to pick up your shirt. Her office will be open 8:30-12:00 and 1:00-4:30.

Information

Attached is some information that might be of use in answering questions; there will also be CS brochures around that might be of use. These can also be picked up in advance from Lorna Kropf if you wish. The Student Life Centre will have booths about general UW information such as residences, so any such questions can be directed there. We should be encouraging people to attend the presentations, since a lot of details will be explained there.

For students interested in business, questions about the BCFM (Computing and Financial Management) can be directed to Colleen Morrow, who will be in SLC, or Duane Kennedy outside MC2065.

For students interested in Software Engineering, students can be informed about the SE option (detailed in the brochure) or, if they are interested in the degree program, they can be sent to Andrew Morton who will divide his time between the CS and ECE booths in the Student Life Centre.

Lunch

Computer Science will be hosting a reception from 12:30-2:00pm in MC5158. Food will be available for all volunteers from noon until 2:00pm, so please come by to eat and chat while you can.

CS Lunch Reception

We will have a pizza lunch in MC5136, a slide show going on in MC5158, and brochures and research directories. Everyone working on UW Day for CS is both welcomed and encouraged to come to the lunch reception, to eat and talk to parents and students. The lunch will be arranged by Tian Kou, so please contact her if there are questions.

Available in DC 12:00-2:00 to talk to people over lunch. Everyone available (faculty and students) and tour guides not on tours should come and chat over lunch.

   • Projector: Shouldn't you project it on a large screen rather than to show it on a laptop screen? --Jeremy

2. Display in fishbowl:
   • Can we collect some research posters to display in the fishbowl? --Jeremy

   • LOL, people will make less suggestions if they have to assume them! I will see what I can do, time will be short till the 4th for me. Jeremy
3. Name Tags:
   • Group(s): would it make sense to have the Group(s) name(s) on the name tag, so that someone from AC doesn't look too stupid when he is asked an AI question, and vice-versa? -- Jeremy
   • There is a tradeoff between having too little and too much information on a name tag. I doubt that most questions will be about particular areas in CS, so I would lean towards not making this distinction. NN
4. Dressing Code:
   • Should we agree on a common dress code? Should we wear the shirt from the University? Are there some available for those who don't own one? Is it a problem if the people from the Database group wear their group's shirts? --Jeremy
   • I will contact Gayle to see if we can get Faculty of Math shirts for all volunteers. NN
