Workers were travelling through the tunnel; they seemed to be carrying food. There's a short video (12 secs, 31MB). Army ants were a part of my childhood list of horrors (along with more common ones like rattlesnakes and quicksand), so I was happy to take a few quick shots and get back to the gentle elephants. And the baby zebra!
