Overview

This course will focus on the intersection between data management and machine learning. In particular, we will look at:

• Data Mangement for Machine Learning: How can database systems support machine learning applications? How can data management ideas enhance machine learning systems?
• Machine Learning for Data Management: How can machine learning be used to improve database management systems?

CS848 will run as a seminar course, meaning that most of our time will be spent reading and discussing papers.

This course assumes familiarity with database concepts, such as schema vs. data, declarative querying, data dependencies, physical data independence, query optimization, and data access methods. It does not assume any prior coursework in machine learning. However, some familiarity with basic concepts, such as features, models, training and optimization, will help.
