CS798 References
There are no required textbooks for this course, but some references
will be especially helpful. I'll collect them here. The
lecture notes will have more references
tied to the content of specific lectures.
- Branko Grünbaum and G.C. Shephard. Tilings and Patterns.
W.H. Freeman and Company, 1987. The definitive reference, but sadly
out of print. If you see a reasonably-priced copy anywhere, buy it.
If you don't want it anymore, I'll probably buy it from you.
- Owen Jones. The Grammar of Ornament (various editions).
A classic sourcebook of images of ornament from around the world.
I believe Dover has an edition with just the colour plates from
the original. Happily, the
full version is available online.
- Craig S. Kaplan. Computer Graphics and Geometric Ornamental
Design. University of Washington, 2002. If you think it's
crass that I'm pointing you at my dissertation (and I agree), just
be glad I'm not selling bound copies. The introductory chapters
contain a distillation of many of the topics I'll cover this term.
- Dorothy Washburn and Donald Crowe. Symmetries of
Culture. University of Washington Press, 1992.
The primary reference on the culturally-specific use of
symmetry. A wonderful text, if for no other reason than
that it highlights an important intersection of mathematics
and anthropology. Also contains accessible histories and
introductions to symmetry and ornament.
