Introduction
Upgrade Overview
Step 1: Identify the Modem Firmware
Step 2: Identify the Current Firmware Version
Step 3: Download the Upgrade File
Step 4: Extract the Upgrade Files
Step 5: Install a Flash Upgrade Utility
Step 6: Document and Clear Your Stored Parameters
Step 7: Upgrade the Modem's Firmware
Step 8: Restore Your Parameters
Your modem is controlled by semi-permanent software, called firmware, that is stored in flash memory. Firmware is nonvolatile; that is, it remains stored in memory when the modem is turned off. However, it can be changed by either the manufacturer or the user as bugs are fixed or new features are added.
Since the firmware in your modem is stored in flash memory, you can upgrade it yourself in a few minutes by using the following procedures.
The upgrade procedure consists of the following steps, which are described in greater detail in the following sections.
- Identify the model number and firmware version of your modem.
- Identify the current version of the firmware at the Multi-Tech Web site. If your modem already has the current firmware, there is no need to update it.
- Download the upgrade file for your modem.
- Extract the firmware .HEX file from the file you downloaded.
- Install a flash upgrade utility from the MT5634ZBA compact disc.
- Document and clear your stored parameters.
- Upgrade the modem's firmware using the .HEX file and a flash upgrade program.
- Restore your parameters.
You must know the model number and firmware version of your Multi-Tech modem to know whether you should update it.
- Run your favorite terminal program. If you are using Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT, you can use HyperTerminal. If you are using Windows 3.11, you can use Windows Terminal.
- In the program's terminal window, type AT&F. Even if you cannot see the AT&F command on your screen, be sure to type it completely, and then press ENTER. If the modem does not respond with OK, repeat the AT&F command.
- Now type ATI and record your results. The model number and firmware version should appear similar to that shown below.

Identify the current version of the firmware at the Multi-Tech Web site. If your modem already has the current firmware, there is no need to update it.
- Using your favorite Web browser, go to http://www.multitech.com/support/firmware/.
- Scroll down to the table that has your modem model number (non-USA firmware can be obtained only from the Multi-Tech FTP site at ftp://ftp.multitech.com.
- Look at the firmware version number for your modem.
- If the firmware version number matches the firmware version number found in Step 1: Identify the Modem Firmware, your modem has the current firmware version, and does not need to be updated.
- If the firmware version number is larger than the firmware version number found in Step 1: Identify the Modem Firmware, your modem has an older firmware version. Continue with Step 3: Download the Upgrade File.
 |
CAUTION: The first digit of the new firmware must match the first digit of the old firmware, or the modem may not work properly. E.g., if your current firmware version is 4.16, replace it only with 4.xx firmware, not 6.xx firmware. |
- If you are not already at the Firmware page of the Multi-Tech Web site, follow the procedure in Step 2: Identify the Current Firmware Version.
- Click the upgrade file name for your modem to start downloading it, and save the file in a temporary directory on your hard disk.
- Move the downloaded upgrade file to the flash upgrade utility directory or folder on your hard disk.
- The file is a self-extracting archive. Extract the files by typing the upgrade file name in DOS or double-clicking it in Windows. The extracted files include a .HEX file, which contains the upgrade data and one flash program each for DOS and Windows 3.1/95/98.
Install a flash upgrade utility from the MT5634ZBA compact disc. There are three utilities: Flash Wizard for Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT 4.0; NTFLASH for Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT 4.0; and DOSFLASH for DOS or Windows 3.1.
Windows 95/98/NT 4.0/2000
- Insert the MT5634ZBA compact disc into your CD-ROM drive.
- When the Autorun menu appears, click Upgrade Utilities.
- In the Upgrade Utilities dialog box, select the flash upgrade utility you want to install.
- Follow the instructions in the setup program.
 |
NOTE: You must restart your computer to finish the Flash Wizard installation. |
DOS, Windows 3.11
- Insert the MT5634ZBA compact disc in your CD-ROM drive.
- Create a DOSFLASH directory on your computer's hard disk.
- Copy the files from the DOSFLASH directory on the compact disc into the DOSFLASH directory on your computer's hard disk.
Before you flash your modem it is important that you send the AT&W1Z command to it to clear out any stored parameters. You should also record the parameters that are currently stored in your modem so you can reprogram it after flashing.
- Run your favorite terminal program. If you are using Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT, you can use HyperTerminal. If you are using Windows 3.11, you can use Windows Terminal.
- In the program's terminal window, type AT&V and press ENTER to list your modem's current parameters.
- Record your parameters by saving the screens and sending them to your printer.
- Type AT&W1Z and press ENTER to clear your stored parameters and reset your modem to factory default.
- Close the terminal program.
 |
CAUTION: You must disable Windows RAS and Microsoft Fax Server service before upgrading the modem's firmware. |
Flash Wizard
- Copy the .HEX upgrade file from the temporary folder to the Flash Wizard folder.
- Run Flash Wizard by double-clicking its icon or file name. Flash Wizard locates and identifies the modems connected to your system.
 |
NOTE: If the message ERROR: No valid devices detected is displayed, verify that the modem is powered on, and that all cables are correctly and securely attached.
|
- Select the modem to be upgraded, and then click Next.
- Select the port to be upgraded from the Port list.
- Select the .HEX file for the upgrade from the Hex File list.
- Click Next to begin the upgrade. During the upgrade, Flash Wizard displays its progress.
 |
CAUTION: Any disruption of the program during the upgrade could cause your device to become inoperable. Wait for the Next button to become active before proceeding.
|
- The message Programming Complete appears when the upgrade is complete.
- Click Next to display the results of the upgrade, and then click Finish to exit Flash Wizard.
NTFLASH
- Copy the .HEX upgrade file from the temporary folder to the NTFLASH folder.
- Run NTFLASH by double-clicking its icon or file name.
- Select the COM port your modem is on and the speed at which you want to program. The default is 57,600 bps.
- Use the Browse button to find the .HEX file for your modem.
- Click Finish to begin upgrading your modem.
- The message Flash Loader has completed appears when the flash upgrade is complete.
- Close the program.
DOSFLASH
To upgrade the modem, run DOSFLASH by using the command dosflash x y, in which x is the number of the port the modem is connected to and y is the IRQ number for the port. The IRQ number is optional if you are using the standard IRQ number for the port. For example, if your modem is connected to COM2, and COM2 has IRQ 3 assigned to it, which is standard for that port, type either dosflash 2 or dosflash 2 3.
 |
NOTE: If DOSFLASH fails, try using NTFLASH or Flash Wizard in a Windows environment.
|
Your modem has been updated. You can now open your terminal program to reprogram your modem parameters or to confirm the update by typing ATI in the terminal window.
