Alex Lopez-Ortiz is a Professor and Cheriton Faculty Fellow in the School of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo. Alex has authored over 150 refereed publications on a variety of topics. A common theme is usually the application of new advanced theoretical techniques to practical problems such as search engine algorithms, internet tomography, data streams, video on demand, paging, chip multi-processing algorithms and constraint programming. This is reflected in his publication record in top conferences in diverse fields, such as DCC, FOCS, INFOCOM, SODA, SIGIR, AAAI, IJCAI, ICRA, ITCS, ESA, SOCG, SPAA, PODC, and SSDBM.

He has also held senior management positions in research and development (R&D) in industry, where he led the research and development of performance critical software projects. He is a co-founder of Dyablosoft.

Dr. Lopez-Ortiz obtained his BMath at the National University of Mexico (UNAM) in 1989, and his MMath and PhD at the University of Waterloo in 1991 and 1996, respectively.
