CS 348: Introduction to Database Management

Fall 2012

Students will work with a state-of-the-art commercial DMBS. The system that we will use is DB2. Learning DB2 is your responsibility. You will find the following resources useful:

• Tutorial guide on using DB2
• Online reference for DB2
• Online course for learning SQL
• Another online course for learning SQL (Note: this site has DB2 specific information as well)
• Guide on using embedded DB2
  • Use the serverlinux028.studen for Assignment 3. The steup procedure is the same as given in the tutorial forlinux024: you only need to logon to a different server.
  • We provide a sample compile that can be used to compile your source files and the utility files util.c and util.h to build the apps. Note that you have to modify compile for your applications; e.g., we assume util.c andcompile are in the same directory.
  • An example file testapp1.sqc that connects to the cs348 database is also given to get you started:
    • Make sure you already setup DB2 on the server;
    • Download the above four files into one folder;
    • Before compiling, you may need to change file permissions chmod a+x compile;
    • Compile your source file by running ./compile;
    • If compilation succeeds, you can run the simple test application by ./testapp1, which prints a message.
