Recorded lectures for February 27 and 29
Hi class,
Hope you all enjoyed a great reading week!
Due to a travel arrangement (attending the NDSS conference), I won’t be able to deliver in-person lectures on February 27 and 29. Instead, I have release recorded lectures on LEARN for the two days.
The three lecture recordings will cover the entire module on Non-technical Aspects in Security, including ethics, administrative security, and a brief introduction to blockchain. None of the topics covered will be examined in assignments. However, this doesn’t make them any less important, especially the awareness of ethical and legal issues.
For students who have taken CS458, you can skip at least the lectures on ethics and administrative security as they overlap with the last module of CS458. Other students are highly encouraged to watch the recordings and get familiar with these topics.
Sincerely, I apologize for being unable to deliver the lectures in-person. I’ll keep an eye on Piazza from time to time so if you have any questions regarding any of the lectures, please do not hesitate to make a post on Piazza and I’ll answer them as soon as I can.
I’ll see you all on March 05 for the second half of this course.
Best Regards,
Meng
CPI Undergraduate Award
The Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute (CPI) Undergraduate Award is one award, valued at $1,000, to be provided to a full-time student enrolled in a University of Waterloo undergraduate course with a significant cybersecurity and/or privacy component.
This award is made possible by the Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute (CPI) to encourage students to actively participate in computer security courses.
Eligibility and Selection
Interested students should review eligibility details about the award.
Selection criteria
For selecting the winner, instructors are required to use the overall course grade (minimum 90% to receive an award). However, they can choose to use additional criteria (only for) breaking ties, including:
- additional objective criteria like consistency of performance in all the course deliverables (e.g., over 80% in all deliverables) and/or
- additional subjective criteria (like extent of participation in-class or in class forums)
We will follow both practices to break ties, in the listed order.
Administration
The award will be administered in accordance with the above terms and conditions, as well as the UW Policy on Undergraduate Student Awards as amended from time to time.
Every eligible student will be automatically considered for the award. If you do not want to be considered for the award, let us know in writing before the end of the course.
The winner of this award will be announced once all grades for this course are finalized. Accepting this award implies a consent to allow CPI to publicise your information, including:
- mentioning your name, photo, and a brief description about you in CPI communications (such as the CPI public and internal websites, e-mails sent to CPI mailing lists, CPI newsletter, etc.)
- listing the same information when CPI discusses with potential donors who are likely to fund the award in future terms
- inviting you for interviews with the CPI communications team for future articles about the award
- inviting you to attend events with current or future donors of the award.
Engaging with CPI
Besides this award, students interested in cybersecurity and/or privacy are encouraged to engage with CPI and utilize the resources provided by CPI to maximize their learning experiences. Here are some avenues for engagement:
- apply for CPI Student Membership
- visiting the CPI websites: public and internal
- joining the public CPI mailing lists
- joining the cpi-students mailing list (restricted to people with an
@uwaterloo.ca
e-mail address) - attending CPI events like CPI Talks, the CPI Annual Conference, and other events.
