Use these forms to measure and display the social structure of group members you have observed.
To run the example , click Relational questions at left, then Dyads and Sociogram. To analyze your own data , click the Clear all button at left, and follow the instructions below.
First , in the blank at top left, define a relational question that can be answered for every pair in the group. Examples: Does X telephone Y ? Does X like Y ? Does X consult Y ? Be sure to use capital X for the actor and capital Y for the object person.
Second , enter the names of people in your group in the spaces at lower left.
You may put an asterisk (*) at the end of individuals' names to mark them as being in some category, e.g., sports fans. These entries will be in rounded enclosures on the sociogram, rather than in rectangles. You may put an exclamation mark (!) at the end of individuals' names to mark them as being in some category, e.g., males. These entries will be colored yellow on the sociogram.
An individual may be marked with both * and !.
Third , click the Relational questions button at upper left in order to define relations in the group.
Fourth , click the Dyads and Sociogram button to see the social structure.
A list of dyadic relations appears first. Each dyadic relation comes from a one in the zero-one table.Click the Show the sociogram button to obtain a graph.
Fifth , click the Show the Control Panel button. A new window appears that allows you to change the sociogram in many interesting ways. Experiment with the options.
You can move the control panel by clicking on the bar with the title "Graph Controls" and dragging. If the control panel vanishes behind other windows, bring the hidden window to the top in the usual way on your computer; or click the button named Dispose of the Control Panel and then click the button again when the button text becomes Show the Control Panel.
If the sociogram gets too far from what you want, restart by clicking the Relational questions button at upper left, and then the Dyads and Sociogram button.
Sixth , click the Image for printing button before trying to print the sociogram. Your browser cannot reproduce the dynamic display on paper, but this button takes a snapshot of the dynamic graph, and the Print command will turn the snapshot into a paper copy of the sociogram. To return to a dynamic display, click the Relational questions button at upper left, and then the Dyads and Sociogram button.
This sociology worksheet was programmed in JavaScript and Java by David Heise. The code may be downloaded .The graph drawing program is largely from Interactive Graph Drawing , which was programmed by úlfar Erlingsson in collaboration with Mukkai S. Krishnamoorthy The design of the display was influenced by Linton Freeman's papers on sociograms, available at his website on social network imaging . Freeman's website also contains links to software for preparing publication-quality sociograms.
