In this paper we focus on sentence planning (microplanning) as a distinct
phase of the generation process, necessary to compute such aspects as
sentence delimitation, sentence-internal organization, reference, etc.
Treating each phenomenon as a separate planning task, we illustrate the
need for a planning paradigm different from the traditional ones in (at
least) this phase because of the complex interactions among these
(semi-independent) subtasks. We describe our solution: a blackboard-based
sentence planner, in which different subtasks are handled by independent
modules that incrementally rewrite and flesh out a text structure (a set of
partially specified input statement(s)) to form a fully specified list of
sentence specifications.
