Multi-Lingual Computing Research at the Technion

Abstract:

This overview describes a number of projects in multi-lingual computing that have been and are being carried out at the Technion. These include the development of

  1. ditroff/ffortid, a bi-directional version of the UNIX(tm) ditroff (device-indpendent troff) for typesetting documents containing, say text in the Latin, Arabic, and Hebrew alphabets
  2. triroff, a tri-directional version of the UNIX ditroff for typesetting documents containing, say text in the Latin, Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, and Japanese alphabets
  3. vi.iv, a bi-directional version of the UNIX vi full-screen editor for editing documents containing, say text in the Latin and Hebrew
  4. MINIX.XINIM, a bi-directional version of MINIX, a miniature UNIX system, so that both the system and all applications running on top of it are fully bi-directional, with no change to any application program
