I always visualized the collapsing of tiling edges as resulting in a pop! when the edges finally become degenerate. When I first created this figure, I put in the pop! for fun, expecting that one or more readers would roll their eyes and mark it with a big red X. Surprisingly, nobody seemed to mind this little comic book effect, so I was perfectly happy to leave it in.
