Table 4-1 describes the Windows NT® 4.0 driver and utility files.

Using a PERC 4/Di RAID Controller with Windows NT 4.0

NOTE: After you install a PERC 4/Di controller driver with NT 4.0, YOU MUST APPLY THE SUPPORT PACK 6A OR LATER.

Installing the Driver

There are two methods of installing the PERC 4/Di Windows NT 4.0 driver:

Use this method if you are performing a new installation of Windows NT 4.0 and want to include the PERC 4/Di driver.

Use this method if Windows NT 4.0 is already installed and you want to add the PERC 4/Di driver.

Use this method if Windows NT 4.0 is already installed and has device drives, and you want to update them with the latest drivers.

Performing a New Installation of Windows NT 4.0

The following sections describe how to install the driver with PERC 4/Di as the primary controller or secondary controller in Windows NT 4.0.

Installing the Driver with PERC 4/Di as the Primary Controller in Windows NT 4.0

Perform the following steps to install the PERC 4/Di driver during Windows NT 4.0 installation from the a bootable CD, where the PERC 4/Di is configured as the primary controller.

  1. Insert the Dell™ OpenManage™ Server Assistant® CD in the CD drive and restart the server.

A bootable CD is detected and the bootable BIOS is loaded into memory.

  1. When Windows NT 4.0 begins to boot from the CD, press <F6> when the following message displays:

Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration...

Within a few seconds, the Windows NT Setup screen appears, requesting additional adapters in the system.

  1. Press <S> to specify an additional device.

  2. Press <Enter> on the OTHER option in the selection screen.

  3. When the following text displays, press <Enter> to load the driver:

NOTE: Because of a Windows NT 4.0 limitation, you cannot enter a partition size larger than 4096 MB while installing Windows NT 4.0. If there are multiple unpartitioned drives in the system during installation, you cannot enter a partition size larger than 1024 MB while installing Windows NT 4.0 because of a Windows NT 4.0 limitation. To circumvent this limitation, remove other drives during installation.
  1. Press <S> to load additional mass storage device drivers, if required; otherwise, press <Enter> to continue the installation process as usual.

Windows NT 4.0 continues to be installed as usual. Refer to the operating system installation documentation for further steps.

Installing the Driver with PERC 4/Di as a Secondary Controller in Windows NT 4.0

Perform the following steps to install the PERC 4/Di driver during Windows NT 4.0 installation, if the PERC 4/Di card is configured as a secondary controller.

  1. Start the Windows NT 4.0 installation process.

  2. Load the device for the primary controller, if necessary.

The Windows NT Server Setup screen appears after loading the Windows NT Kernel.

  1. Press <Enter> to continue.

Setup displays the mass storage devices that it has recognized in your computer.

  1. Press <S> to specify an additional device.

  2. Press <Enter> on the OTHER option in the selection screen.

  3. Press <Enter> to load the driver when the following message displays:

  1. Press <S> to load additional mass storage device drivers, if required; otherwise, press <Enter> to continue the installation process as usual.

Windows NT 4.0 continues to be installed as usual. Refer to the operating system installation documentation for further steps.

Adding the PERC 4/Di Driver to an Existing Windows NT 4.0 Server

If Windows NT 4.0 is already running on this system, use the following steps to add the new NT 4.0 driver for the new PERC RAID controller.

  1. Insert the Dell OpenManage Server Assistant CD, containing the PERC 4/Di Windows NT 4.0 driver, into the CD drive.

The driver files can also be installed from a network drive.

  1. Click Start—> Control Panel—> Settings.

  2. Double-click on the SCSI adapter icon.

  3. Select the Drivers tab.

  4. Click Add.

  5. Select Have Disk.

The Install From Disk box appears.

  1. Specify the location of the PERC 4/Di Windows NT 4.0 driver and click OK.

  2. Click OK to add the Windows NT 4.0 driver.

  3. Reboot the system after the PERC 4/Di Windows NT 4.0 driver installation has completed successfully.

Updating an Existing Windows NT 4.0 Server

Perform the following steps to update the driver.

  1. Insert the Dell OpenManage Server Assistant CD into the CD drive.

  2. Press Start—> Settings—> Control Panel—> System.

The System Properties screen displays.

  1. Click the Hardware tab.

The Properties screen displays.

  1. Click the Device Manager tab.

The Device Manager screen displays.

  1. Click SCSI and RAID Controllers.

  2. Double-click Dell PERC4 RAID Controller.

  3. Select the Driver tab and click Update Driver.

The screen for the Upgrade Device Driver Wizard displays. The Wizard helps you update the driver for the hardware device.

  1. Follow the steps in the Wizard to update the driver for the hardware device.

  2. Follow the steps in the Wizard to search for the CD.

  3. Select the INF file from the CD.

  4. Click Next and continue the installation steps in the Wizard.
