System Prerequisites

Dell OpenManage IT Assistant database management utility manages the data repository that is part of the IT Assistant services. Your computer must fulfill the same prerequisites as your IT Assistant services.

IT Assistant Components

Dell OpenManage IT Assistant comprises two main components: the IT Assistant web-based user interface and the IT Assistant services. The IT Assistant web-based user interface consists of files such as HTML, Active X controls, and graphics. The IT Assistant services consist of the IT Assistant Connection Service, the IT Assistant Network Monitor Service, the IT Assistant Data Repository, and command-line utilities. You can install the IT Assistant web-based user interface with the IT Assistant services, or you can install each independently. Independent installation allows you to establish remote interfaces to manage your systems.

You can install the IT Assistant web-based user interface with or without a Web server located on the local system (the system on which you are installing). If a Web server is not present, the IT Assistant web-based user interface can only be used on the local system. If you install the Web server after installing IT Assistant, you can rerun the IT Assistant installation program and instruct the program to add the interface as a virtual root. If a Web server is present, the IT Assistant web-based user interface is added automatically to the Web server as a virtual root.

NOTES: Dell recommends that you install the Web server before installing IT Assistant. However, if you install IT Assistant before you install the Web server, you must install IT Assistant again to reintegrate the Web server.

While running the IT Assistant web-based user interface, the Internet Explorer toolbar and the Internet Explorer shortcut keys may function differently than usual. For example, the Internet Explorer Refresh button will restart the web-based user interface. The same result occurs if you press <F5>.

The default page for Web servers can vary. You must ensure that the IT Assistant default Web page, default.htm, can be reached by these various Web servers, either by customizing the Web server at installation or by duplicating the home main page with the proper file name.
