Overview

The configservices utility enables you to configure the following features:

You must run the configservices utility on the management station. The configservices utility stops and restarts the IT Assistant services to make configuration changes.

Configuring DMI Discovery

To discover systems using DMI, perform the following steps:

  1. Open a command prompt window.

  2. Change to the \bin subdirectory of the IT Assistant installation directory (default is \Program Files\Dell\OpenManage\IT Assistant).

  3. At the prompt, type the following command and press <Enter>.

    configservices.exe

  4. Select DMI and click OK.

The configservices utility restarts the IT Assistant services and configures them for DMI discovery.

To disable DMI discovery, perform steps 1 through 3 only in the preceding procedure, clear (deselect) the DMI check box, and then click OK.

Configuring SNMP Discovery

NOTE: SNMP must be installed and running on the management station.

To discover systems using SNMP, perform the following steps:

  1. Open a command prompt window.

  2. Change to the \bin subdirectory of the IT Assistant installation directory (default is \Program Files\Dell\OpenManage\IT Assistant).

  3. At the prompt, type the following command and press <Enter>.

    configservices.exe

  4. Select SNMP and click OK.

The configservices utility restarts the IT Assistant services and configures them for SNMP discovery.

To disable SNMP discovery, perform steps 1 through 3 only in the preceding procedure, clear (deselect) the SNMP check box, and then click OK.

Configuring CIM Discovery

NOTE: The following are important points about CIM discovery:
  • To discover and manage CIM-instrumented systems, IT Assistant requires the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) core 1.5 or above to be installed on the IT Assistant management station. The WMI core is installed with Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Professional, and Windows Server 2003. You can also install the WMI Software Development Kit (SDK) to enable CIM discovery and management.

  • You must install CIM instrumentation (Client Instrumentation 7.0 or Server Administrator) on the systems you want to discover through CIM.

  • You must configure a CIM user name and password with logon as a service rights on the IT Assistant management station. The IT Assistant services run under this user name when communicating through CIM. You must also configure each managed system with a domain user of the same CIM user name and give this user administrator rights.

If you do not configure the CIM user name and password, the user name and password of the user currently logged in to the management station is assumed. If the logged-in user does not have administrator rights on the managed systems, CIM discovery may not work.

  • The procedure in this section also enables DCOM because the settings required to enable DCOM are part of the settings required to enable CIM.

To enable CIM instrumentation and discovery and then add the CIM user name and password, perform the following steps:

  1. Ensure that the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) service is installed on the management station.

To ensure that WMI is present, go to the Windows control panel, double-click the Services icon, and verify that the WMI service is running. If it is not installed, obtain the WMI core 1.5 or later from www.microsoft.com and install it.
  1. Create the CIM user name with Logon as a service rights:
  1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, point to Control Panel, point to Administrative Tools, and click Computer Management.

  2. In the Computer Management (Local) tree, expand the Local Users and Groups branch, then click the Users folder.

  3. On the menu bar, click Action, then click New User.

  4. In the New User dialog box, fill in the required information fields with the user name and password.

Ensure that you clear (deselect) the User must change password at next logon check box. Also ensure that this is the same user name and password of a user with administrator rights on the systems that you intend to manage through CIM.

  5. Click Create, then click Close.

  6. Close the Computer Management dialog box.

  7. Click the Start button, point to Settings, point to Control Panel, and click Users and Passwords.

  8. In the Users and Passwords dialog box, select the new user name and then click Properties.

  9. In the next dialog box, click the Group Membership tab, select Standard User, and then click OK.

  10. Click OK again.

  11. Click the Start button, point to Settings, point to Control Panel, point to Administrative Tools, and click Local Security Policy.

  12. In the Security Settings tree, expand the Local Policies branch and click User Rights Assignment.

  13. Double-click Log on as a service.

  14. In the Local Security Settings dialog box, click Add.

  15.  In the Select Users or Groups dialog box, select the new user name from the list, click Add, and then click OK.

You may have to scroll the list to display the new user name.

  16. Click OK again.
  1. Change to the \bin subdirectory of the IT Assistant installation directory (the default installation directory is \Program Files\Dell\OpenManage\IT Assistant).

  2. At the prompt, type the following command and press <Enter>.

    configservices.exe

  3. In the Dell OpenManage IT Assistant dialog box, select the CIM check box.

The configservices utility automatically selects the DCOM check box as well, and the Domain, User, Password, and Confirm Password fields become active.

If the CIM check box is grayed-out and unavailable, the WMI core is not installed on the system. Install the WMI core and perform this procedure again.

  4. Enter the operating system domain. If you enter nothing, the default is local.

  5. Enter the user name (this is the user referred to in step 2).

  6. Enter and confirm the password.

  7. Click Apply.

  8. Click Exit.

To disable CIM discovery, perform steps 3 through 5 only in the preceding procedure, clear (deselect) the CIM check box, and then click OK.

Configuring DCOM

To enable DCOM, perform the following steps:

  1. Open a command prompt window.

  2. Change to the \bin subdirectory of the IT Assistant installation directory (default is \Program Files\Dell\OpenManage\IT Assistant).

  3. At the prompt, type the following command and press <Enter>.

    configservices.exe

  4. Select DCOM.

The Domain, User, Password, and Confirm Password fields become active.

  5. Specify valid domain, user name, and password information for the system and then click OK.

The configservices utility restarts the IT Assistant services in the context of the specified user and configures them for DMI discovery.

To disable DCOM, perform steps 1 through 3 only in the preceding procedure, clear (deselect) the DCOM check box, and then click OK.

NOTE: If the CIM check box is selected, you cannot separately clear the DCOM check box. You must first clear the CIM check box before you can clear the DCOM check box.
