V.92 Modem and V.44 Features Implemented and Supported by Dell: Broadcom ModemXtreme V.92 PCI Modem User's Guide

. Overview   . V.44 Compression

Overview

V.92 is a new dial-up modem specification from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) that introduces several new features designed to improve modem performance, including QuickConnect, and PCM upstream data transmission.

In addition, V.44, a new standard for data compression that allows higher data compression rates than previous standards, is also included.

QuickConnect - Reduces the time it takes for your computer to connect to your ISP. With QuickConnect, the modem identifies the phone line characteristics during a data connection, saves this information, and uses this data to compare line quality variables when making a future connection with the same server modem. The amount of time saved varies on each phone line.

PCM Upstream - Increases the upstream data rates from the user to the ISP, which reduces upload times for large files and e-mail attachments. A maximum upstream data rate of 48 Kbps is possible, compared to the previous V.90 standard and maximum upstream data rates of 31.2 Kbps.

While PCM Upstream does increase upstream speeds, it also reduces download speeds at the same time. Because of this, Dell has disabled PCM Upstream on your computer.

V.44 Compression

A new ITU standard designed to improve data compression rates between your computer and the ISP. These higher compression rates, which increase between 20 and 60 percent on average and as much as 200 percent, mean more data can be downloaded in the same amount of time. Since HTML text files are highly compressible, the most significant improvement will be noticed when you are browsing and searching the web.
