To install the BCM V.92 56K Modem Driver on your computer under Red Hat® 7.2, 7.3, or AS 2.1:
- Locate the binary rpm. For Red Hat 7.2 the rpm is called BCMSM-XX.YY.ZZ-N.rh72.i386.rpm.
For RedHat 7.3 it is called BCMSM-XX.YY.ZZ-N.rh73.i386.rpm,
where XX.YY.ZZ is the version number of the modem driver and N is the rpm release version.
For Linux AS 2.1, the rpm is called BCMSM-XX.YY.ZZ-N.as21.i386.rpm.
For example, the Red Hat 7.3 rpm for the driver version 3.4.19 release 3 would be called BCMSM-3.4.19-3.rh73.i386.rpm.
- Log in as root.
- Execute the command 'rpm -ivh --force[rpm name]' where [rpm name] is the name of the appropiate rpm.
This command will:
-Install the BCMSM.o module to the /lib/modules/[kernel version]/misc directory.
-Create the script /etc/rc.d/init.d/BCMSM.
-Create symbolic links /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S99BCMSM and /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S99BCMSM pointing to /etc/rc.d/init.d/BCMSM.
-Rebuild module dependencies.
-Load the BCMSM.o module.
-Create the tty device nodes /dev/ttySM0,/dev/ttySM1,... up to the number of modem devices installed in the system. If only one modem device is present the command will create only /dev/ttySM0.
-Create a symbolic link /dev/modem to /dev/ttySM0.

- Log in as root.
- Install the source rpm with the following command: 'rpm -ivh BCMSM-XX.YY.ZZ-N.src.rpm'.
This should create the file /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/BCMSM-XX.YY.ZZ.tar.gz.
- Choose a directory in which to build the module and cd to it. In this example the build directory will be /tmp.
- Unpack the sources to the build directory with the following command: 'tar -xzf /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/BCMSM-XX.YY.ZZ.tar.gz'. This should create the directory /tmp/BCMSM-XX.YY.ZZ.
- Change directory to /tmp/BCMSM-XX.YY.ZZ.
- Execute the following command: 'make install KERNEL_DIR=[kernel source directory]'.
This command will:
