ParaWeb is a system for utilizing Internet or intra-net computing resources for executing serial programs on faster compute servers or parallel programs on a variety of possibly heterogeneous hosts. Our focus in ParaWeb is to provide efficient yet simple mechanisms for remote execution and communication within Internet applications. Many of the ideas we are exploring are extensions of existing load sharing, distributed shared memory and message passing systems. Our early experiences suggest that ParaWeb can be implemented on top of conventional Web technology and may result in dramatic improvements in performance for coarse-grained applications.
