Technovation Girls Waterloo Workshops

Teams must register in order to attend the workshops. Drop-ins will not be admitted. Tickets are NOT transferrable to other attendees. Attendees must register so that parental consent can be gathered.

Technovation Girls is a team event. Participants should form teams prior to registering. If you can’t find a team, register as a team of one and come to our workshops to find team members.


Kick-off Workshop — Saturday, January 4, 2020
Registration will open closer to the date

This workshop introduces the Technovation Challenge and the MIT App Inventor coding tool. Students and mentors will have a chance to meet and form teams.

Pre-requisites for the workshop: None.


Ideation Workshop — Saturday, January 18, 2020
Registration will open closer to the date

This workshop guides teams through an ideation process to help teams generate and explore ideas for their app. Teams will learn about idea generation, idea converging and personas.

Pre-requisites for the workshop: Girls should have formed their teams.


User Experience Workshop — Saturday, February 1, 2020
Registration will open closer to the date

In this workshop, teams learn how to use paper prototyping to design an effective user interface for their app. Teams will also learn about the importance of defining a minimal viable product.

Pre-requisites for the workshop: Teams should have chosen the idea for their app.


Design Workshop — Saturday, February 15, 2020
Registration will open closer to the date

In this workshop, teams will learn how to test their paper prototypes. Teams will also meet with coaches who will help brainstorm the idea or the design of the app.

Pre-requisites for the workshop: Teams should have completed their paper prototypes.


MIT App Inventor Workshop — Saturday, February 29, 2020
Registration will open closer to the date

This workshop will cover several features of the MIT App Inventor coding tool. Assistance will be provided on how to set up MIT App Inventor.

Pre-requisites for the workshop: Teams should have completed the testing of their paper prototypes.

What to bring: laptop, Android-based mobile phone, chargers


Business Workshop — Saturday, March 14, 2020
Registration will open closer to the date

In this workshop, teams will learn how to make an effective pitch video. Senior division teams will also learn about how to make a business plan, while junior division teams will learn about ways to make money from an app.

Pre-requisites for the workshop: Teams should have begun development of their app.


Group-work Workshop 1 — Saturday, March 28, 2020
Registration will open closer to the date

In this workshop, teams may consult with coaches to get advice on any issues they are encountering with their app development. Teams may consult with MIT App Inventor coaches, User Interface coaches, Pitch Video coaches and Business Coaches.

Pre-requisites for the workshop: Teams should come prepared with questions for the coaches.

Group-work Workshop 2 — Saturday, April 11, 2020

Waterloo Regional Pitch Event — Saturday, May 9, 2020
Registration is by invitation only. Submit your entry to the Technovation Challenge to receive your invitation.
