Breadth and Depth Requirements 2006-2007

Many of the checklists have an “Elective Breadth and Depth” requirement that makes reference to “Arts Group A”, “Arts Group B”, and courses from the Faculties of Science, Applied Health Studies, and Environmental Studies. The following chart categorizes each of the courses offered by UW for use in these requirements.

The “Depth” requirement may be met in two ways:

• 3 courses (1.5 units) at 3rd year level or higher that have the same prefix, or
• 3 courses (1.5 units) with the same prefix forming a prerequisite chain of length three.

Here are a number of examples of prerequisite chains of length three:

• BUS 121W, followed by BUS352W, followed by BUS 362W.
• ECON 101, followed by 201, followed by one of 301, 333, 341, 342, 355, 357, 361.
• ECON 101 and 102, followed by 202, followed by one of 301, 302 (note that 2 courses are required before taking 202 but they do not form a chain).
• ECON 101 and 102, followed by 231, followed by one of 334, 335 (note that 2 courses are required before taking 231 but they do not form a chain).
• JAPAN 101R followed by 102R, followed by 201R.
• PHYS 121, followed by 122, followed by one of 222, 226, 234, 246, 252, 256, 263, 358, 375, 380, 381.
• PSYCH 101 followed by 207, followed by one of 304, 306, 307, 308, 320.

Many subject areas do not have prerequisite chains. Students interested in these areas should simply take three courses at the 3rd year level or higher.
