The MFCF -> CSCF Split - Who Gets What

This is a summary of the currently planned division of resources between MFCF and CSCF. It is subject to change, simply providing a rough idea of the split.

  • mathmac54.math (the Math Mac Depot)
CS
  • 1 undeployed Netra as a print server
  • backup.math
  • the old backup tape jukebox
  • the new backup tape jukebox
  • debian30, as a Debian distribution machine, that will have shared use/access
Retiring
We've been trying to decommission "math.uwaterloo.ca" for years now (see RT #38327). It's been agreed that MFCF can own it. CSCF can make new instances as needed of whatever services remain on it.
As we discover other small servers that haven't been divided (e.g. as mathmac54 wasn't), we'll keep track to be sure that the division is fair.

Teaching UNIX Systems

Math
  • landen, mef08, magnus
  • bacon, blanch, maddison
  • wronski
  • 1 undeployed Netra as a CPU server

  • Stats lab (roxbee, simeon, wilder)
CS
  • Nexus servers (atik.math + 1 being purchased)
  • Nexus Lab machines (3 rooms)
  • X11 terminals (3 rooms)
  • Mac Lab machines (servers and clients)
  • Realtime Lab machines

Networks

In rough terms:

Math
the Cisco equipment
CS
the Extreme equipment
but there are some exceptions, e.g. for the CS MC 2nd floor rooms.

Miscellaneous

bbs6.math will be shared as a first stage patch testing machine.

To Be Decommissioned

These will be phased out in a controlled manner:

although we'll keep 2 phone lines for MFCF and 2 lines for CSCF.

Space

Classrooms

Math CS
X11 MC 3008, MC 6080 MC 2037, MC 2061, MC 3022
Windows MC 3006, MC 3009 MC 3004, MC 3005, MC 3027
Macs MC 2062, MC 2063, MC 3003
Graphics MC 6055
Realtime MC 3018
Nortel MC 3007

Machine Rooms etc.

It's unclear what kind of space CSCF will get in the DC. So far there's been no assumption that CSCF will have any non-classroom space in the MC once it moves to the DC.
